RUNNING QUOTE:............ Level-pace running is the best way to run most races. However, level-pace does not mean level effort. It means increased effort as the race progresses..............

SUMMER SCENE: Meriden’s Fun Run series launches June 22 MERIDEN — Distance runners unite. The starting gun for the Meriden Parks & Recreation’s Summer Fun Run series is about to sound. The Fun Run, which dates back to 1970, will again run on Wednesday’s at 6:30 p.m. at Platt High School starting next week, June 22, and continuing through August 17. Fun Run Director Fred Bucchieri has mapped out a three-mile course around Oregon Road, Coe Avenue and near Hanover Pond. The nine-race schedule will go off rain or shine, barring a thunderstorm or extreme weather. Bucchieri said the Fun Run attracts 15-20 runners a week. He welcomes anyone else to show up on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. next to the Platt High School track. The event is free. “It’s a good opportunity to get a race in,” Bucchieri said. “It’s popular with cross country runners who want to get some summer work in. We also have several recreational runners. It’s a good mix, but we would love to have more. This is open to all runners in and out of Meriden.” Bucchieri sets up the cones and times the runners. He gathers the results for the runners to compare times from week to week. He plans to post them online and submit times to the Record-Journal. In addition to the three-mile race, there is 3/4-mile race around the Platt fields offered to children.
